Unblock America

Twelve plain reforms that, adopted together, end the slow theft of American income, time, and opportunity by a concentrated few.

This platform is a list. Each item is a single law or rule that quietly costs ordinary Americans money, time, or freedom and pays a narrow interest in return. Adopted one by one, the proposals get watered down or traded away. Adopted in unison, they restore a country that works for the people who live in it.

Our situation is simple. America has dozens of bad laws that each benefit a concentrated few companies or people, while stealing vast sums of money from everyone else. In isolation, each policy is a painful inconvenience. Together, these policies are bankrupting America. Put simply, if we don't face our problems, our children will live worse lives than ourselves.

The platform consists of twelve policies.

Eleven of them have a research document behind them — the sourced numbers, who profits from the status quo, and the strongest case against us. Read the research.

Policy 01

Adopt national as-of-right building codes.

The key concept I'm describing is often called “as-of-right” development or “by-right” permitting. In Japan specifically, this works through:

  1. Yōto chiiki (用途地域) — the 12 (now 13) nationally standardized zoning categories that define what's allowed in each district.
  2. Kenchiku kakunin (建築確認) — a “building confirmation” process, which is a ministerial/technical check that the plans comply with the code, not a discretionary permit. If your building meets the code for its zone (use, height, floor-area ratio, setbacks, etc.), confirmation must be issued. There's no public hearing, no neighbor veto, no discretionary review.

So while permits technically are required, they're non-discretionary.

Policy 02

Eliminate payroll tax paid by employer.

Incentivize companies to hire Americans. Increase taxes on capital gains and income to cover lost revenue.

Policy 03

IRS to automate income tax filing.

The process of requiring Americans to file their taxes exists because Intuit, H&R Block, and the accounting industry lobbied for it. Our time and money is being stolen.

Policy 04

Separate healthcare and employment.

Incentivize employers to hire Americans by removing the burden of paying for employees' healthcare.

Policy 05

Remove the requirement to blend ethanol into gasoline. Grow food instead.

This current policy is madness. It's the equivalent of taking billions of dollars and lighting them on fire.

To compensate farmers, shift subsidies to fruits and vegetables.

Policy 06

Fund K–12 education nationally. Allow local control.

The current policy of paying for education with land tax has caused free riding. Residents of each municipality can enjoy the benefits of an educated workforce, without paying their fair share. As a result, we've underspent on teachers.

Policy 07

Make solar noon noon. Make midnight midnight.

End daylight savings time. DO NOT create “permanent daylight saving time.” Make noon noon.

Policy 08

Eliminate HSA, FSA, and 401k.

Each of these policies should be disconnected from employment. Raise limits on IRAs to match existing 401k limit.

Policy 11

Require states to use automated congressional districting.

Gerrymandering is a primary cause of our polarized, gridlocked political system. Requiring automated districting, such as using the shortest split line method, will immediately, irrevocably end gerrymandering. Congress will become accountable to diverse constituents, and will moderate.

The platform passes when enough Americans know it exists. Reading it is step one. The next step is staying in touch.
